Q: “What do you do?” A: “I’m on Assignment!”

Posted by on May 30, 2014

A few months ago someone asked me that age-old question, “What do you do?”  Rather than immediately jumping into a long litany of things I do for a living, I just stood quietly . . . almost mysteriously.  After a thoughtful moment, the words that came out on my mouth surprised even me:  “I’m on assignment!”  The person asking the question paused very respectfully and then responded, “Oh, I understand!”  The thing was . . . I didn’t fully understand my answer at the time.

In thinking back as to why those words would have come out of my mouth, I remembered the prayerful affirmation from A Course in Miracles I had been saying daily: “Oh Good God, please reveal your plan for me:

“What would You have me do? Where would You have me go? What would You have me say, and to whom?”

A huge smile of awareness came over me when I realized by stopping to ponder and wonder about the answer to those simple questions I was asking for an ‘assignment’.On a very deep level I was praying to be used by Spirit to serve others. What I wasn’t necessarily prepared for was that the details would be given to me ‘on a need-to-know basis’, meaning ‘my assignments’ would often be done from a place of ‘fog’.

My latest ‘assignment’ is that I am to blog regularly; while I am still a bit foggy about exactly what that means, my commitment is to sharing my spiritual ponderings.

For inspiration I often look toMolly Hahn’s Buddha Doodles. (To have daily Buddha Doodles sent to your inbox just go to and give her your email.)  Below is one of Molly’s Doodles, with my God-shouts!

How would your life shift if you began each day as if you were a Special Agent for Spirit, waiting for your assignment?  Doesn’t it make you think of the original TV series of Charlie’s Angels when the phone would ring and a heavenly voice would say: “Hello Angels, your assignment, should you choose to accept it is . . . . ?”  Maybe it’s just me, but I just loved the glamour of the girls and the excitement of their assignments.  I always imagined wearing high heels, being all glammed up, doing what they did. Ok, maybe I can get a little Hollywoodish . . . I have to confess sometimes when I hear the yang voice of my intuition kick in it sounds a little like John Forsythe’s voice, with the mystery of it all.

Seriously, my commitment to ‘be on call’ has been most significant spiritual up-leveling of my life. IF I am to begin blogging, as an assignment blessed from above, who am I to question my qualifications or ability? There is one thing I am absolutely sure of: If you get the inspiration, you get the assignment. The only real decision is whether you will accept the assignment.

Dear one, IF you are reading this blog, YOU are getting the call. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to ask the same questions I ask daily:

What would You have me do?

Where would You have me go?

What would You have me say, and to whom?

See you in the field . . . on assignment!

Thank you for showing up and most importantly responding to your assignment to share your spiritual ponderings with all of us. The most powerful teaching for me in this is that so many of us are in a “hurry” to get where we think we’re supposed to be going, and can sometimes miss our assignments if we try to intercept and navigate the way we “think” it should go. I love the thought of being placed on an assignment on a need to know basis and allow our assignments to be spirit driven, trusting our teacher, even through the fog. Please keep this up, you have an amazing talent for delivering powerful teachings through your writing style. XOXOXOXOXO

KC…You are so modest…I love that about you! You come from heart, not ego. Above are listed 7 titles of the many hats you wear…there are so many more! As a Master Toe Reader…I thank you daily when I am on assignment…so many people WANT their toes read and I try not to deny anyone that honor….! I learned to read from those you taught to read…and It is my greatest desire to travel abroad and teach others to read too.

I also thank you for the Spiritual Midwife that you are! One day…I hope to learn this from you as well. As a baron woman…I have suffered silently the pain of my empty arms and heart…why did god(ess) give me a mothers heart and no one to call me mother?? I still grieve the many miscarriages…but alone, because everyone around me…has been blessed of children…dare I share my burden when they are so happy.

Recently, when I share my ideas and dreams with people…they were taking my ideas and running with it. I was offended, until recently I realized…”WAIT a minute SHeri”…what if…those ideas were never meant for you in the first place…and were intended for those you shared them with???? Then I was reminded….I took a test a long time ago…resulting in the fact that I am an IDEALIST. Years have gone by, and I have looked in want ads for an IDEALIST position. Practically unheard of.

But…at SWIHA…I am getting to use my IDEALIST gift. (Visionary)
This BLOG article you shared…is so beautiful. Now I understand why and who I am. At 57 years old, my life begins. Thanks to you and your Vision…I am birthed…and will be able to experience just being me. You are an amazing Spiritual MidWife. I love love love you! <3

I think that the trouble with is it purpose or assignment, often comes from waiting for a clear loud message while there are hints and whispers given to us all day long. Many of us do that:)

“If you get the inspiration – you get the assignment” – profound and simple!

Hi KC – This post was perfectly timed for me. I have been pondering the (possibly Picasso) quote (I changed it a bit) “The meaning of life is to discover your gifts; the purpose of life is to give them away.”

Thank you for sharing your journey!
